On the coast of Ventura County, I have seen white sage, black sage, and purple sage on the same hill.
I associate purple sage mostly in coastal sage scrub. I have even seen it growing wild on the beach. Black sage is more a part of slightly further inland chaparral adjacent to Oak woodland. And white sage belongs on any slope that is hot, rocky, and sunny and is usually not immediately on the coast.
